THE SALT COVENANT

Have you ever heard of it? Most people have not. When you are finished reading here, be sure to share this with your pastor so that he can use it in his marriage counseling classes.

The Covenant of salt is mentioned twice in the Bible and a close reference is mentioned once.

Num 18:19 All the heave offerings of the holy things, which the children of Israel offer unto the LORD, have I given thee, and thy sons and thy daughters with thee, by a statute forever: it is a covenant of salt for ever before the LORD unto thee and to thy seed with thee.

2 Chr 13:5 Ought ye not to know that the LORD God of Israel gave the kingdom over Israel to David for ever, even to him and to his sons by a covenant of salt? What is this covenant of salt? The covenant of salt is an expression of never ending dedication. It is the actual qualifications by which a binding can be broken. In a marriage ceremony, both the groom and the bride are given a small amount of salt in their hands. As they proclaim their dedication to each other, they are instructed to turn into the wind and cast the salt upward into the wind. As the salt is blown away and eventually lands, the covenant is established. You see, until you are able to pick up every grain of salt that was cast into the wind, you are not released from that marriage.

Whew, I get goose bumps just writing about this. Can you ever collect all the salt grains again? Of course not. Then God can never break the vows (covenant) you are making with Him. That is just how serious God is, when He institutes a covenant. He is sitting in the middle of every marriage that is established in His name.

Lev 2:13 And every oblation of thy meat offering shalt thou season with salt; neither shalt thou suffer the salt of the covenant of thy God to be lacking from thy meat offering: with all thine offerings thou shalt offer salt. Your marriage is a salt covenant between God, a wife, and a husband.
